The Importance of Security in today's day and age

Lately, security is a buzzword among the tech-savvy. What does security entail, though? And why is it important? In this article, we unpack these questions and offer guidelines for improving your online safety.

What is it?

Security is an incredibly broad term encompassing a broad spectrum of situations, locations, and devices. In this article, we focus specifically on online safety, with particular emphasis on cybersecurity and security related to IoT (internet of things) devices.

Cybersecurity

Cybersecurity, also known as information technology security or electronic information security, aims at defending your network and information from malicious attacks. Your network includes all your connected devices, such as computers, servers, mobile devices, electronic systems, and even your data. This protection is vital, whether you're a private individual or a large corporation.

IoT Device Security

IoT (internet of things) security focuses specifically on protecting your connected devices. First off, IoT devices are interrelated devices (mechanical or digital) connected to the internet. Examples include your smartwatch, smart meter, and security systems. These devices collect an incredible amount of data. A person that knows how to use it will get a detailed and intimate picture of who you are. They will know where you live, work, and play and also your financial, medical, and emotional wellbeing. This is very personal data that should remain private.
In a corporate setting, IoT devices capture data in surveillance and the inner workings of the company, which could be used maliciously during corporate espionage.
IoT security ensures that your devices are adequately protected and that your data is secure from malicious and unlawful use.
Unfortunately, end-to-end security is not always a significant consideration in the design phase of IoT devices. The reason here is that the idea of networking appliances are new. Thus designers did not realize the security risks from the start.

Why is it Important?

If someone gains unlawful access to your network, they can wreak havoc, ranging from data hostage to identity theft and anything in between. According to a RiskBased Security report (https://www.riskbasedsecurity.com/2019/11/12/number-of-records-exposed-up-112/), data reaches exposed 7.9 billion records, all within the first nine months of 2019. In comparison, 2018 saw less than half of that for the same period. Yearly, this number increases rapidly, highlighting the importance of having a current cybersecurity system in place.
Generally, cybercriminals target medical services, retailers, and public entities. From here, they collect financial and medical data, which they then use to target individuals for financial gain. Other common cyber crimes include corporate espionage, customer attacks, and data theft.

How Can One Learn and Get Better At It?

The step in improving your cybersecurity is to install up-to-date security software. Ensure that this is from a reputable supplier on your network.
With this in place, make an effort to stay informed of the latest in cyber- and IoT security protocols and risks. Knowing what your potential weaknesses are, places you in a better position to be aware of how you – and your devices – interact with each other and the wider internet. This awareness ensures that you recognize threats quickly and easily.
